1. Objective

Accurately assessing the quality of a bank’s loan portfolio is critical in evaluating the overall safety and soundness of the financial institution. This course is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills to effectively assess the credit quality of loans that comprise the loan portfolio, a key element in assessing overall portfolio quality.

The course covers key analytical concepts for determining borrower credit worthiness, including the need to look beyond delinquency status and borrower net worth; sources of necessary financial information, and techniques to obtain additional critical information through formal discussions with bank personnel. Students are provided the opportunity to put these concepts and techniques into practice through the review of multiple case studies, which will include simulated loan discussions with an instructor playing the role of “the banker”.
